With the advent of internet, there has been a drastic shift in the ways in which fashion is produced and consumed. Today fashion primarily circulates digitally and the most evident form of this circulation are fashion shows during fashion weeks which are principally experienced on screens rather than through newspapers or magazines. Such a shift has not only affected the consumption but it has altered the very making of the fashion image and the different practices, figures, spaces and techniques of producing a catwalk image.
UNMAKING THE FASHION DIGITAL IMAGE is an exhibition exploring fashion mediation, digitalization and labour. Studying the company InDigital.com which covers worldwide fashion weeks and gives instant content to major fashion portals like Vogue.com, the Fashion Studies Department at The New School Parsons Paris illustrates the trajectories of the catwalk image from its depiction at the show to its arrival on our screens. Who and how many people are involved in the making of these images? What specific techniques, tasks and conditions are at play in the making of these images?
Showcasing interviews, visual, audio and written documentation, UNMAKING THE FASHION DIGITAL IMAGE explores the multifaceted systems in action behind the creation of fashion digital catwalk pictures. The exhibition is developed in three different sections which unveil the hidden multiple figures involved in the making of these images, the different times and spaces in which the images are produced. Each section is then supported by previously unseen historical press and media documents that position these contemporary practices into a larger context of fashion mediation.
